Two children die after consuming contaminated food

Two children died last night in Ol-Moran area of Laikipia County after consuming food that is believed to have been contaminated.

Lucy Njeri Wangui (12) and her cousin Brooklyn Muhando (2.5) are said to have eaten the meal on Monday night, and since then have been experiencing serious stomachaches and diarrhoea.

Confirming the incident, Laikipia West Sub-County Administrator Samuel Mwangi said that the government will ensure that proper investigations into the matter are done.

Sharing the sentiments of residents, Mwangi attributed the deaths of the two children to the doctors’ strike that has paralyzed services in health facilities in the country for the past two months.

“I would like to plead with the striking doctors to find a solution with the government faster,” he said.

According to area residents, the family of Mary Wangui took a meal of Ugali and sukuma wiki on Monday night, a meal that they suspect may have been poisoned.

Beth Njeri, a family member, opined that it could have been the work of a person who harboured a grudge against the family of six.

“We are very sad as we have lost two children. We are also praying to God so that the murderer is found and brought to light,” she said.

They are now urging authorities to ensure that a serious probe into the matter is conducted.

Mary Wambui is currently admitted at an unknown private hospital where she is receiving treatment. The other members of the family including the house help were earlier on treated and discharged from the same hospital.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital.
