21 children rescued after parents conned over fake U.S. donor

Police in Siaya County have rescued some 21 children who had been confined at an illegal home for ten months.

According to Children’s Officer Beatrice Oguda, one suspect was arrested following a raid at the home in Liganua village on Wednesday.

Mrs. Oguda revealed that the children confined in the dirty homestead included 13 boys and 8 girls, and that they come from Bunyala sub-county in the neighbouring Busia county.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, the sub-county officer said the raid was secretly conducted at night following a tipoff from members of the public who said the children appeared malnourished and unkempt.

Reports indicate that the children were brought to the home in July last year after their parents were hoodwinked that a donor would cater for their education and later have them flown to the U.S. for further studies.

The owner of the children’s home, Rose Atieno Opiyo was arrested and during interrogations, revealed that the children had been brought by her son, a pastor in Bunyala.

Mrs. Oguda who spoke to Radio Ramogi on phone  said her department together with the police are currently investigating whether the suspects were part of a child trafficking syndicate.

19 out of the 21 children have been taken to Dr. Peter Children’s Home in Siaya Town as they wait for their parents while two have already been reunited.
