21 year old attemps suicide from Mosque’s roof top

A middle-aged man on Friday, November 11 caused a stir at the Majengo Mosque in Nyeri Town when he climbed at the top of the minaret in a suicide attempt threatening to disrupt the lunch hour prayers.

The 11:00 am scenario attracted a huge crowd of spectators as police, Mosque officials and some residents tried to dissuade Hassan Hussein, 21, from jumping off the 20-meter tall minaret.

Hussein could, however, hear none of the persuasions as he threatened to make good his suicide bid any time the rescuers tried to come closer as his mother, Hadija Wambui, watched helplessly tears rolling down her cheeks.

When persuasion failed, a ladder was sought where a police officer and some young men climbed to forcibly bring him down.
It was still a daunting task for them as the young man firmly held on to the minaret as he fought off the rescuers.
In the end, ropes had to be used to fasten one hand and leg to ensure his safety in case he slips off their hands during the rescue operation that took almost two hours.

He was later whisked away by the police officers in order to protect him from irate residents who were baying for his blood.
Speaking after the rescue, his mother said his son adopted weird behaviors late last year following the death of his younger brother who was about to sit for his KCPE examinations.

The younger brother allegedly died from injuries he sustained after being hit on the head with a billiard ball at a pool venue within Nyeri Town.
The culprit was arrested but later set free in unclear circumstances.
