22 girls rescued from FGM in Migori
Twenty-two girls in Kuria East, Migori County are seeking refuge at Taranyanga Primary Boarding School after escaping female genital mutilation.
Kuria East community-based organization, GOSESO chairperson Susan Mutinde said the 22 girls in their custody fled from their homes.
She said the girls are in safe hands, however she pointed out that feeding them and providing them with other basic needs like clothes remains a major challenge.
Mrs. Mutinde said most of the girls flee from their homes without clothes. She has appealed to the government through the office of gender to support the girls at the rescue camp.
The GOSESO chairperson appealed to all leaders to help in the fight against the outlawed cultural practice.
In his remarks during the Jamhuri celebrations Migori County Commissioner Joseph Rotich said security officers are prepared to deal with individuals abetting female circumcision.
