22 Mombasa MCAs accused of demanding bribes from Coca Cola Company – EACC

Twenty two Mombasa County Assembly representatives were on Monday arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for allegedly demanding bribes from Coca Cola Company.

Speaking to journalists in Mombasa, EACC regional boss Simon Pkukat Cherpka confirmed that the MCAs were directed to record statements after EACC detectives received a tip off that they were in the process of demanding bribes from Coco Cola Company at their manufacturing plant in Kikambala, Kilifi County.

The MCAs through, their committee chairman Swaleh Kibwana, dismissed the claims, insisting that they had only visited the plant after a number of Dasani water bottles sold to the County Assembly were found to contain impurities.

Kibwana said that they had been accompanied by legal and health officials to inspect the plant and to determine whether the bottled water from the company was contaminated, and the risks that such contaminations would pose to the public.

He said that they were shocked by EACC officials’ move to arrest them, claiming they had demanded bribes to clear the company’s reputation.

They MCAs were set free after recording statement at EACC headquarters in Mombasa.
