23 students arrested inside bar in Kirinyaga ahead of school reopening

Police in Kirinyaga County on Sunday arrested 23 students in a local bar at Ngurubani market in Mwea Constituency.

According to Mwea-East Sub-county Police Commander Daniel Kitavi, security officers from Wang’uru police station stormed Club Season Ngurubani bar after receiving a tip off from members of the public about minors drinking at around 9pm ahead of schools reopening on Monday.

Police had a difficult time arresting the learners since some of them who managed to escape were throwing stones at the police officers after they were joined by Ngurubani street boys.

The owner of the bar, who is said to be a teacher, was also arrested and will be charged for violating COVID-19 protocols on operation of bars as well as selling alcohol to students.

“We managed to arrest 11 girls and 12 boys,” said the police commander.

Kitavi said the 23 teenagers from Ngurubani town and the surrounding areas will be arraigned Monday morning.
