25 children ‘stolen’ from Nyeri found in Kariobangi

Twenty five children, who went missing from Kieni East in Nyeri County two weeks ago, were on Thursday, April 6, found locked in a room in a three-storey building in Kariobangi, Nairobi.

The minors, from different primary schools in Kieni East, went missing after two ladies claiming to run a non-governmental organization based in Nairobi said they would assist the children from poor backgrounds access education at a fee of Ksh 3,000.

The Coordinator of Children’s Department in Nyeri County, Kungu Mwaniki, said the found children were a pathetic sight, with the boys spending their nights on the floor.

The children were transferred to Nyeri Remand Children’s home from Nairobi.

They are waiting to be reunited with their families after being interrogated on the living conditions that they were exposed to – and whether they were subjected to torture or forced labour.

Mr Kungu said the motive of the two women who “stole” the children is yet to be established. Police are investigating the incident.
