25th anniversary of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga set for Kisumu

The 25th Anniversary to celebrate the life and times of Kenya’s pioneer opposition doyen the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga will be marked in Kisumu city this weekend.

This is according to East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) legislator Dr. Oburu Odinga who termed it a break from the norm since the event is always held in Bondo at the Kang’o home of Jaramogi.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on Monday, Dr. Oburu said the family decided to hold the celebrations in Kisumu since Jaramogi — the country’s first Vice President — was very instrumental in the development and rise of the city.

He stated that Kisumu is key to Jaramogi’s history as he was among the first people to put up storey buildings in the area, such as the African House and Ramogi House, against the wishes of colonialists.

Oburu, who is the eldest son of Jaramogi, said a number of activities have been lined up from Saturday that will culminate to the main event on Sunday at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground.

The MP added that there will be a public forum at Tom Mboya Labour College on January 19 where historians and elders will tell stories of Jaramogi and showcase the Luo culture.

According to the former Bondo Member of Parliament, there will also be a major interdenominational prayer at the ACK Church in Milimani on Sunday before proceeding to the main venue where several guests invited guests will grace the occasion.
