3 people hospitalized after consuming illicit brew

Three people have been admitted at Chuka general hospital after they consumed an unknown second generation brew in a local bar in Chuka town.

The two men and one woman were rushed to Chuka general hospital after they started developing pains in the stomach before they passed out.

Speaking to the press, the doctor in charge who sought anonymity said that the three patients were responding to treatment and have stabilized.

On Thursday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery warned that alcohol manufacturers might be charged with attempted murder if their products test positive for harmful substances.

The government said it will take legal action against manufacturers, distributors and sellers of illicit brews as the new phase of the ongoing crackdown begins.

Nkaissery directed NACADA and other relevant bodies to finalize tests on illicit brews nabbed in the ongoing campaign before action is taken based on their toxicity levels.

Nkaissery warned government will go after all manufacturers, suppliers and seller of any drink that will result in death or hospitalization.

The CS added those found culpable will be charged with murder or attempted murder and compensate families of those affected by such killer brews as provided in the law.

The government has already sacked 99 chiefs and sub chiefs and 15 police officers for allegedly aiding production and sale of illicit brew.

20,000 suspects have also been arrested since the presidential declaration on the war against illicit brew was made.

Nkaissery had earlier announced that over 16 million liters of illicit brew and hundreds of illegal drinking dens have been destroyed since the war on illicit brew started two weeks ago.
