3 Suspected Marburg Virus Victims In Uganda Isolated

Three people suspected of having contracted the virus are being closely monitored by health personnel.

This was confirmed during a meeting of health workers from the Ministry of Health, NGOs in Uganda and the WHO.

The three men have been isolated until lab results of tests carried out on them are complete.

Samples from the three suspected cases are being tested at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe.

This comes one day after the country's Ministry of Health announced one person had died of the disease.

Uganda's Ministry of Health said one of the three is the brother of the health worker who died of Marburg on September 28th this year.

They will all be transferred to the Entebbe isolation unit once results are out.

They are now quarantined at their respective homes, but in separate rooms.

About 80 people who were in close contact with the victims are also being monitored.

The Marburg virus was last reported in Uganda in 2012 and at that time four members of the same family in the western Ugandan district of Kabala died.

According to WHO, Marburg is a severe and highly fatal disease caused by a virus from the same family as the one that causes the Ebola hemorrhagic fever.
