3 traffic policemen in court for collecting bribes

Three police officers were arraigned before a Kisii Court on Monday to answer to charges of collecting bribes from motorists along the Kisii-Kilgoris highway.

The officers Patrick Mumo, John Kipsang and Veronica Leiro are faced with two counts of corruption.

They were charged with receiving bribes on June 11, 2016, at Kiogoro on the Kisii- Kilgoris road so as not to charge the motorists on their offenses.

The trio was arrested on June 11 during an operation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) with Sh24,840 which is believed to have been illegally acquired from motorists along the route.

Appearing before Principal Magistrate John Njoroge, the three accused officers pleaded not guilty and were released on a personal bond of Sh200,000 each or cash bail of Sh50,000.

The mention will be mentioned on July 2 and heard on July 4, 2016.
