30 out of 193 Kenyans who have tested positive for Covid-19 outside the country have succumbed to the virus, Foreign Affairs CS Omamo has said.

According to her, the ministry has developed an emergency committee chaired by CAS Ababu Namwamba to monitor the situation surrounding Kenyans in the diaspora.

“88 cases are still active, 4 are in Intensive Care Unit while another 71 have recovered from the disease. Our ministry is ensuring that all Kenyans around the globe are following the instructions in their respective countries,” she said.

CS Omamo was speaking to the Adhoc Committee on Covid-19 pandemic that is chaired by Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja during a virtual meeting to appraise the Senators on the ministries response to the coronavirus situation in Kenya.

She noted that they have negotiated with ministries in different countries to help cater for Kenyans were forced to extend their stay.

The CS also cited the situation affecting Kenyan students in Wuhan, China saying the ministry has been in communication with the relevant universities and has provided stipend for students upkeep even as they continue to remain indoors as per government guidelines.

“On evacuation, our role was to facilitate them, that is, you look for an airline, you pay your ticket, and then we arrange for you to come home,” she said.

She told the Sakaja-led team that so far the ministry has facilitated the return of 744 Kenyans back home.

Some of them she said are 70 from Sudan; 7 from Dubai and 21 from Pakistan; 165 from China; 135 from UAE and others are from UK.

In India, the CS said the situation was bad since they were sick so the ministry facilitated 233 Kenyans.

On truck drivers in the East African region, CS Omamo said Kenya is working with its neighbors.

“Yesterday (Tuesday) the President held a meeting with heads of states in East Africa and they formed a committee to look into the truck drivers border issue,” she said.

She added that some Kenyan truck drivers have tested positive in Rwanda and Uganda.

With regards to refugee camps, the CS said everyone is on high alert and “the government has issued restrictions on moving in and out of Daadab camp and up to today no case have been reported.”
