32 Kenyans among 157 killed in Ethiopian Airlines flight crash
- Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, while addressing the press on Sunday, stated that the government had also dispatched a team to Addis Ababa.
- The team, which is expected to arrive in Ethiopia on Sunday evening, will be led by Transport PS Esther Koimett and Director of Air Transport Nicholas Bodo.
- There were no survivors in the crash.
Thirty-two Kenyans were among 157 people on board the Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed on Sunday morning, the government has stated.
Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, while addressing the press on Sunday, said the plane, which was heading to Nairobi, was carrying passengers from 34 different countries with the majority being Kenyans.
CS Macharia further disclosed that the Kenyan government had also dispatched a team to Addis Ababa “in the quest for accurate and more up-to-date information.”
The team, which is expected to arrive in Ethiopia on Sunday evening, will be led by Transport Principal Secretary Esther Koimett and Director of Air Transport Nicholas Bodo.
The other passengers in the Boeing 737-800MAX flight came from varied nationalities including: Canada (18), Egypt (6), Ethiopia (9), France (7), U.S.A (8), Netherlands (5), Slovakia (4), Sweden (3), China (8) as well as Britain (7).
Spain, Israel, Morocco and Poland had 2 nationals each on the flight while Belgium, Indonesia, Ireland, Mozambique, Norway, Saudi, Sudan, Somalia, Serbia, Togo, Uganda, Yemeni, Nepal, Nigeria had one each.
“The aircraft B-737-800MAX with registration number ET-AVJ took off at 08:38am local time from Addis Ababa, Bole International Airport and lost contact at 08:44am,” read the statement,” read an earlier statement from Ethiopian Airlines.
The aircraft was delivered to the airline barely four months ago and the crash becomes the second major fatal accident involving the Boeing 737 800MAX in less than five months.
There were no survivors in the crash.
