32,000 people displaced in 48 hours after floods wreak havoc in Kisumu

32,000 people have been displaced in the last 48 hours following heavy rains that caused flooding in Kisumu County.

According to the County Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, rivers such as Nyando broke their banks causing massive flooding in areas that have not experienced flooding over many decades.

“Kisumu County and the nation at large is facing probably the most trying time of our independence history. Never before have we had to deal with multiple disasters at the same time with far reaching effects on populations as we do today. Indeed this is unprecedented,” he said on Wednesday.

Areas most affected are Nyando Sub County; parts of Muhoroni; lower parts of Nyakach; parts of Kisumu East around Nyalenda; parts of Seme and Kisumu Central especially along the lake shores.

Though no deaths have been reported, Prof. Nyong’o warned that the county is dealing with a compounded problem of rising water levels in the lake and flooding from rivers such as Nyando.

Further, he said 80 acres of maize beans and other crops have been destroyed in Muhoroni.

The Governor warned that the situation is dire and called for immediate intervention through urgent provision of relief food, mattresses and blankets, mosquito nets, clean drinking water, water purification chemicals, masks and sanitizers and medical supplies.

He further urged the National Government, non-State actors and all people of good will to join the county government in addressing what he termed as ‘humanitarian crisis of monumental proportions.’

“The time to show our humanity is now. Let us all come together as one to alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters,” the county boss said.
