37-year-old man dead, two injured after mine collapses in Migori

One person died while two others escaped with injuries after the wall of a mine they were digging collapsed in Masara, Migori County, on Saturday evening.

The miner, 37-year-old Francis Onyango perished under the weight of the collapsed mine’s debris, forcing villagers to dig into the mine to retrieve his body.

Two of his companions who were rescued from the tragedy – one of whom has since been identified as Erick Odhiambo, 27 – are recuperating in hospital.

Area Assistant Chief Tom Ngoche has now asked area residents to halt any mining activities, intimating that the soil is too weak following weeks of heavy downpour.

Last year, six people died in Migori after a mine they were working in collapsed, entombing them and sealing their fate.

The same year, three people perished at the Kasigau mine in Taita while four others sustained life-changing injuries.
