39,000 title deeds not collected in Chuka

The County Government of Tharaka Nithi now says that there are 39,000 uncollected title deeds at the lands office despite the government being constantly accused of not issuing title deeds to land owners.

According to one of the land officers at the Chuka land offices, the title deeds were delivered in April but due to lack of green cards it has been difficult for the owners to collect them.

The officer further regretted the situation saying that these title deeds could have been used by their owners as security.

The officer also added that their issuance could reduce the recurrent land related conflicts experienced in the area.

This comes just a few weeks after the National Land Commission (NLC) revoked 2,400 title deeds of public utility land which were fraudulently acquired across the country.

The commission also announced that it had regularized some titles and were working on printing out more titles for public institutions like schools.

The commission vice chair Abigael Mbagaya urged individuals still holding public land to surrender it before the commission moves to revoke such titles.

Early this year, the President directed that school land ownership documents be processed and registered in the names of school committees and management boards.

The directive came in the wake of an attempted plot to grab a piece of land belonging to Lang’ata Road Primary School in Nairobi.
