3m litres of illicit brew poured, ten suspects arrested

The Crackdown on illicit brews in Kirinyaga County has seen more than 3 million litres of second generation liquor poured and five out of nine factories closed.

In Kirinyaga Central Constituency, area Member of Parliament Gachoki Gitari and Kirinyaga Central OCPD Eliud Monari led residents in impounding and pouring over 1.5 million  litres of illicit alcohol and closing two factories at Kibingo and Kagumo.

While in Mwea Constituency, area MP Peter Gitau, together with two OCPD’s; Titus Yoma and Samuel Saurey also led residents in pouring over 2.5 million litres of illicit liquor and closing the biggest plant in Kirinyaga.

Kirinyaga Police Commander, Rono Bunei, said that the operation would continue, with the county team heading to Gicugu Constituency on Sunday.

Gicugu area MP Njogu Barua is, however, accusing the police and Gichugu DCC, Titus, for working with the brewers to frustrate the ongoing operations as the three main factories in the county are yet to be closed.

This comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta declared war on illicit brews and issued a directive that has seen alcohol worth millions destroyed.

TEN PEOPLE ARRESTED

Meanwhile, ten suspects were Sunday arrested and more than 1000 litres of illicit brew nabbed after Police raided Mororo Village in Madogo division, Tana North Sub-County.

The officers made the raid after villagers complained that notorious brewers in the area were brewing alcohol using harmful substances.

The residents allege that the illegal breweries were run by a notorious lot who despite being arrested several times still went back to the same business after being released.

Acting Sub-County Commissioner Jackson Lekonon confirmed the incident saying that the war against illicit brew in the area will continue, especially after mapping out areas known for brewing the dangerous liquor.

Lekonon added that the culprits would be arraigned in court on Monday to serve as an example to those still going on with the business.

The administrator warned that anyone engaging in the illegal businesses would be dealt with according to the law.
