CS Amina: 3 million textbooks to be in schools by January 15

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed on Monday officially flagged off a caravan of Grade 1 English and Kiswahili textbooks at the Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB) offices to schools countrywide.

Speaking during the flag-off, the CS said 21,627 public schools have so far received the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) materials.

She also stated that 20 trucks were dispatched on Sunday and another 10 – headed to Bungoma, Turkana and Kakamega Counties – would be dispatched on Monday.

According to Ms. Amina, a total of 3 million textbooks will be in schools by January 15 so as to ensure the curriculum is implemented without any hitches.

“The NEMIS (National Education Management Information System) is working very well and we are satisfied with the process,” said CS Amina, further urging County Education Directors to ensure all schools capture information on the system by January 11.

The education sector recently left stakeholders jittery after the CS made an unprecedented u-turn on the new curriculum roll out date.

This was after she announced that the new curriculum will be rolled out in January 2019, days after she had announced a 2020 roll out.

According to sources, the decision to continue with the roll out in January this year was pushed through by influential persons within the government.
