4 dead, 13 injured following clashes between police,civilians says Boinett

Four people have died, 13 others injured and six police officers have sustained serious injuries since voting started in Thursday’s repeat presidential election, Inspector General (IG) of police Joseph Boinett has said.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, Boinett says that several incidents of confrontation between the police and civilians led to the said loss of lives and injuries, revealing that 86 people have so far been arrested for various electoral offenses across the country over the same period.

The detailed statement lists blocking of elections by rowdy youths, intimidation of IEBC officials, blocking of the election and violence in various constituencies across the country as some of the incidents that the police have had to grapple with while trying to facilitate the electoral commission conduct the repeat presidential election.

“On October 26 in Busia County at around 1230 hrs at Mabunge Primary School, 100 goons stormed the polling station and burnt down 1 ballot box, 12 booklets, 21 leaflets, 1 polling booth, 23 envelopes, 2 IEBC reflective jackets, 1 burner, 3 form 41 and 58 form 32, 18 form 32 a, 10 form 33 and 12 form 34,” Boinett said in the statement.

This follows a similar report released yesterday (October 26) by the IG indicating that three people had died because police-rioters altercation.
