4 die, several injured after askaris ‘cause’ accident in Kericho

Former Roads Minister Franklin Bett has condemned an incident in which Kericho County Government askaris have been accused of throwing spikes at a moving Nissan matatu  causing it to roll several times.

The accident, which occurred on Kisumu –Kericho road killed one person on the spot injuring several others. Three more people are said to have succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at Kericho District hospital.

It is reported that the matatu driver refused to bribe officers who were stationed at Tiddy’s after he allegedly picked passengers at an undesignated spot in town. The matatu attempted to drive off, and the askaris followed the vehicle.

It is alleged that when the askaris caught up with the matatu at ‘Corner C’ area near Kenya Power Sub-station, they threw the spikes at the moving vehicle causing it to lose control.

Infuriated locals barricaded the road by lighting bonfires and placing huge boulders on the motorway.

Following the protest, Bett called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the county askaris.
