5 arrested for allegedly stealing Ksh0.5M from Mpesa agents

Five suspected fraudsters have been arrested in Maralal town for allegedly stealing Ksh.500, 000 from 15 Mpesa agents Saturday.

Confirming the incident, Samburu County Police Commander Francis Kumut said the five suspects have been conning Mpesa operators in the town for last two months.

“They withdraw money from an agent and claim to have deposited in a wrong number. They also make calls to their friends posing as customer care agents,” Kumut added.

Kumut said the group has fleeced 15 Mpesa shops in Maralal town with latest victim losing Ksh.52, 000 on Friday.

The notorious five, four men and one woman, were nabbed by Maralal CID officers who had received a tip off from a local businessman.

The four had attempted to escape using a hired saloon car belonging to an administration police officer based the town. Some residents asked what relationship the officer had with the suspects, saying it was suspicious for crooks to hire a vehicle belonging to security officer.

Meanwhile the five have been detained at Maralal Police station as officers conduct further investigations into the incidents.
