5 dead after multiple-vehicle collision in Salgaa

Five people died on Wednesday evening following an accident involving multiple vehicles at Migaa black spot near Salgaa on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

Several others sustained serious injuries in the 5.30 pm accident that involved seven vehicles, three saloon cars, four transit lorries and a canter lorry.

Rongai OCPD Japhet Ngatwa confirmed that police had retrieved five bodies from the scene.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of a truck transporting timber beams from Eldoret lost control of the vehicle after its brakes reportedly failed thereby ramming into all the other vehicles that were headed to Nakuru.

The Kenya Red Cross team that arrived at the accident scene had to use a special machine to cut the wreckage of one small vehicle in which three bodies were trapped.

Casualties were rushed to Nakuru level five hospital and other health facilities around the area.

The accident caused a heavy traffic snarl up on the busy road.

Police from Salgaa Traffic Base had a hard time controlling traffic as members of the public milled around the accident scene.
