6 Kenyan fishermen detained in Uganda for alleged trespassing

Six Kenyan fishermen from Remba Island in Suba North constituency were arrested on Friday and their boats confiscated over allegedly trespassing into Ugandan territory.

The fishermen were arrested while on a fishing expedition on Lake Victoria and taken to Hama Island in Uganda where they are being detained.

Remba Island Beach Management Unit Network chairman Semekiah Okoth Mamra said the six were arrested around 6:30 p.m.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on phone, Mamra said that apart from two fishing boats, Ugandan security personnel also confiscated fishing gears and their catch of unknown value.

Earlier this week, a section of Kenyan MPs from the region led by Suba North lawmaker Millie Odhiambo and her Bondo counterpart Gideon Ochanda urged Interior CS Fred Matiang’i to enforce laws that protect fishermen.
