6 new coronavirus cases confirmed in Mombasa, 1 in Nairobi

Kenya has confirmed 7 more cases of the new coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 303.

Six of the cases are from Mombasa while one case is from Nairobi.

The latest cases are from 707 samples tested in the last 24 hours. All the new cases are Kenyan from the newly kicked-off mass testing exercise.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said despite the seemingly low numbers, the across Africa, the virus has spread wildly, with numbers tripling overnight in certain countries.

CS Kagwe noted that World Health Organization (WHO) had warned that despite the low numbers in Africa, there was a possibility that cases would rise in the coming days.

At the same time, he called out Kenyans who were not taking the pandemic seriously, saying it was only through concerted efforts that the war on the pandemic would be won.

He gave an example of Kawangware and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) that had seen a surge in the number of confirmed cases despite initially having only one case.

He also noted that the ministry of health has embarked on mass testing which has seen over 25,000 kits being deployed countrywide.

The government has a target of 250,000 samples by the end of June.

Further, CS Kagwe has reiterated that the routine updates will remain, saying that the MoH has a mandate of informing Kenyans on what to do in order to flatten the curve.
