60 students arrested over illicit brew

More than 60 students from Moi University in Eldoret spent Friday night in police cells following a crackdown on illicit brews conducted in their hostels.

Uasin Gishu Liquor Board Chairman Armstrong Rono says a student at the university who is said to be a drug peddler was among those arrested and rolls of bhang recovered during the raid.

Rono said the liquor bar where the students were revelling was operating illegally as no pubs are allowed to be situated close to learning institutions.

The students will be arraigned in court on Monday.

This is not the first incident in which students have been arrested for consuming illicit brews and bhang.

In October, Police in Eldoret arrested 500 students for engaging in intoxication and sex in a night club.

It is reported some of the students were under 18 years and others were found in possession of bhang and used condoms in the club.

The arrest came two months after 41 students from various secondary schools were arrested and locked up at Kiangwachi Police Patrol Base in Kirinyaga County after they were found in possession of bhang, tobacco and engaging in an orgy inside a Nairobi-bound bus.

After a thorough search, the officers found several rolls of bhang, tobacco and match boxes hidden in one of the girl’s private parts.

Kirinyaga County Director of Education Elizabeth Karani confirmed that a 33-seater bus, which was loaded with 41 students, was intercepted along the highway by officers from Sagana traffic base.

Jadidah Nyawira, a resident, said she spotted the bus at Kibirigwi trading center, noting that the bus had loud music and heavily intoxicated students who were misbehaving publicly.
