600 families homeless after floods sweep Samburu village

Over 600 families have been rendered homeless after a village in Samburu East Constituency was swept away by floods following heavy rains that continue to be experienced in the region.

Residents of Lerata village who have spent the past two nights in a nearby church say all their property was swept away by the floods.

According to the area member of county assembly, Jackson Lelenkeju, the Samburu County government has distributed food to the victims.

This comes just days after more than 100 families from Mwiki and Kiuu locations of Kiambu County were displaced following flashfloods that swept the area.

The affected families have since sought temporary shelter from the neighborhoods awaiting aid from the government and well-wishers.

County and provincial administration officials, who were involved in the rescue efforts, have urged those living in flood prone areas to move to safer grounds.

Elsewhere, over 200 families were displaced by mudslides caused by the heavy downpour in West Pokot County.

Residents of Kerelwa, Pokot South Sub County have since been urged to vacate their homesteads as the region may experience more mudslides.

The ongoing rains have also left a trail of destruction in the coast region with hundreds of families being left homeless and schools and houses damaged in Kilifi and Tana River counties.
