7 family members killed in Salgaa accident

Tragedy struck early Saturday morning when a car and a truck collided on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, claiming the lives of seven people – all members of one family.

The fatal collision occurred at Saligaa area at 2am, claiming the lives of a man, his son, daughter, daughter in-law and three grandchildren. The seven perished on the spot, but the occupants of the truck escaped with minor injuries.

According to a relative, Peter Wanjau, the victims were headed to Kitale after attending a burial ceremony of their relative in Nyeri.

“I was headed to Nairobi when I came across the accident. The small car’s number plate was familiar and I had to cut short my journey,” he said.

After car and truck collided head-on, a bus rammed into the back of the vehicle.

He said the driver of the ill-fated Toyota 110 was trying to overtake several vehicles along the climbing lane when the accident took place.

The victims’ bodies were moved to Nakuru County Mortuary, while the involved vehicles were towed to Salgaa Police Station.

Injured passengers were taken to Rift Valley Provincial Hospital in Nakuru for treatment.
