7 senior police officers sacked over graft, forgery

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has sacked seven senior police officers over graft, forgery and human rights violations allegations.

When releasing results of officers vetted in 2015, the NPSC withheld the results of 31 officers to conduct further investigations.

Out of 31 officers, 24 have been found suitable and competent to continue in the service while the 7 have been removed from the service in accordance with Vetting Regulation 32 (1).

Those found unsuitable for service include Senior Superintendents of police (SSP) Lawrence Martin Kariuki, William Meto Kiprotich, Joseph Kipkemoi Kemeli, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Peter Kemboi Chemos, Superintendents (SPs) Jackson Muriuki Magambo, Samuel Olentutu Olenkiti and Samuel Bore Kipwese.

Another officer Nelson Omwenga Nyakundi will be subjected to disciplinary action for using certificates that do not belong to him to get recruited.

In October 2015, 63 senior police officers were sacked by the NPSC over alleged corrupt dealings unearthed during a vetting exercise.

The 63 top police officers included 28 senior superintendents, 32 superintendents and 3 assistant superintendents.

In the process carried out in two phases last year, 1,364 top cops were vetted, with 1,272 being found competent.

Results of 29 officers remained pending to allow the commission conduct further investigations.

The commission’s chairman Johnston Kavuludi said corruption was the main reason the 63 officers were sent packing and cited a case where an OCPD was found with Mpesa transactions of Ksh 7.7 million within 17 months.

Another officer, a constable, was found to have transacted Ksh 3.1 million in 3 months through Mpesa.

Former administration police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi was among the senior police officers sacked.

Kavuludi had said that all the officers who ammased wealth through illegal means will have to pay for the wrongdoing.
