700 families displaced as floods wreak havoc

Over 700 families in Mulot, Narok County are counting losses following heavy rains that pounded the area causing massive landslides and destroying crops in their farms.

The residents, most of who live on escarpments, are now appealing for aid from the government and humanitarian organisations as they fear that if the rains continue to pound the area, they will have no harvest.

According to the residents, most of their farms were swept away by floods, especially their maize farms, leading to fears of food shortage in the near future.

Those living in low-lying areas expressed fear over the danger posed by landslides, which have now become frequent in the area and are calling for assistance in moving to safer grounds.

The residents of Narok are not the only ones affected by the ongoing rains.

A convoy of trucks and smaller vehicles was left stranded on Tuesday night, after the Kitale- Lodwar road was flooded following heavy rains.

The floods around the Kambi- Karai area at the border of West Pokot and Turkana County halted the movement of people and cargo to and from Lodwar Town.

However, National Youth Service personnel came to the rescue of the stranded motorists and refilled parts of the road that had been washed away by floods.

They also improved the drainage around the affected section, thus diverting floodwater from the road.

The locals urged the national government to come up with a permanent solution to the problems experienced during rainy seasons by tarmacking the road.

Meanwhile, four people were swept away by floods at Kasuri village in Mount Elgon, bringing to 24 the number of those who have died in flood related incidents across the country.

The persistent week-long rains also continued to wreak havoc, destroying homes and displacing hundreds of people.

Several villages were also cut off from basic supplies and roads were rendered impassable.

The Kenya Red Cross has put the number of those injured owing to the ongoing floods at 41.

Over 1,900 households have also been displaced and over 1,800 livestock lost.

Heavy rainfall was witnessed in Narok, Nakuru, Bomet, Busia, Nandi, Nyeri, Kisumu, Kakamega, Bungoma, Kisii, Kericho, Nyeri, Meru and Turkana Counties.
