704 people test positive for COVID-19; death toll hits 4,800 after 5 succumb

The Ministry of Health on Tuesday announced that 704 people tested positive for COVID-19 from a sample size of 6,776 tested in the last 24 hours.

The positivity rate is now at 10.4%, with total confirmed infections rising to 241,134 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 2,421,633.

From the cases, 667 are Kenyans while 37 are foreigners; 367 are females and 337 are males, while the youngest is a one-year-old infant and the oldest is 104 years.

The cases were recorded across various counties namely; Nairobi 162, Kiambu 85, Nakuru 44, Nyandarua 37, Uasin Gishu 35, Murang’a 30, Mombasa 23, Laikipia 18, Nyeri 18, Machakos 16, Busia 15, Embu 14, Kajiado 14, Garissa 14, Makueni 13, Isiolo 13, Marsabit 12, Taita Taveta 11, Turkana 10,Kilifi 10, Elgeyo Marakwet 10, Migori 9, Nyamira 8, Kitui 7, Narok 6, Tharaka Nithi 6, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Kish, Homa Bay, Samburu, Siaya, Tana River and Kakamega 5 cases each, Lamu 4, Meru 4, Kericho 3, Nandi 3, Kisumu 2, Kwale 2, Mandera 2, Bungoma 2, Vihiga 1 and West Pokot 1.

The ministry also said 756 patients recovered from the disease; with 689 from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program, while 67 are from various health facilities countrywide. Total recoveries stand at 229,762.

Five patients however succumbed to the coronavirus, all of them being late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits in September 2021. This pushes the cumulative fatalities to 4,800.

“A total of 1,815 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 4,053 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program. 147 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 104 of whom are on ventilatory support and 33 on supplemental oxygen,” noted Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.

“10 patients are under observation. Another 771 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 709 of them in general wards and 62 in High Dependency Units (HDU).”

CS Kagwe also stated that a total of 2,874,858 vaccines had so far been administered across the country as of September 6, 2021. Of these, total first doses are 2,080,483 while second doses are 814,375.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 39.1% with the majority being males at 55% while females are at 45%. Proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 3.0%.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 241,569; Others 245,146; Health Workers 135,296; Teachers 123,740; while Security Officers are at 68,624.
