Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has on Wednesday said the 8-4-4 education system will phased out by 2017 with the new curriculum now being piloted in all 33,000 schools.

Speaking at the Kenya Institute of curriculum and Development (KICD) after a consultative meeting with members of National Steering Committee on the new education curriculum, Dr Matiang’i said roll out of the new curriculum remains on course.

“We are now ready to move on with the roll out of activities for 2018 which will include the countrywide roll out because we are doing this in public and private schools,” said Dr Matiang’i .

The Education boss also dispelled rumours that that the ministry would not be conducting the annual Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) this year.

Dr Matiang’i further assured parents that the Treasury has already released Ksh. 29 billion to be disbursed to all schools and that textbooks for Form One students would be shipped to schools by next week.

On her part, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development chair, Sarah Ruto, said that 470 schools were on a pilot programme last year and phase two of the program will be rolled out in all schools.

“We are now coming to Phase Two of the competency-based curriculum in 2018 and its going to be in all schools. All the preparations that can be done have been done. There comes a time where you have to stop preparing and you take the next step,”said Sarah Ruto.
