8 Sunshine Secondary School students arrested over attempted arson

Eight Sunshine Secondary School students have been arrested over attempted arson in the school on Friday night.

The eight, who are currently in police custody, allegedly planned to torch a dormitory in the Nairobi based school.

Langata OCPD Elijah Maina has confirmed the incident saying the eight students will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.

The students are currently being held at Langata Police Station.

The Sunshine Secondary School case is the latest in a spate of school fires across the country – a crime that has been on the rise in recent weeks, despite the Education Ministry’s attempts to stamp out the trend.

A collaborative approach

Speaking while presiding over Kisii School’s Prize Giving Day on Friday, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi called for an honest and collective approach to deal with the unrest in the country.

The CS has stressed on the need for key stakeholders in the education sector, including teachers unions, to build solid partnerships with school administrations.

Matiangi told school boards involve parents and students in decision making and implementation to avert strained relations.

The CS said drug abuse, gambling and indiscipline are to blame for the unrest in schools.

Elijah Maina contributed to this story.
