80 people killed, scores injured in Bastille Day terror attack in France

A truck drove into a crowd at Bastille Day ceremonies late Thursday in Nice, France, killing dozens of people, Regional President Christian Estrosi tweeted. French President Francois Hollande has called it an act of terror.

The attack happened on Bastille Day, a major holiday in France. Victims had been watching fireworks on the beach and were walking down a promenade, either back home or to their cars.
In the immediate aftermath of an incident that initial reports said killed at least 80 people, officials declined to formally declare the attack as terrorist assault pending further news. But several French media said the anti-terrorist investigation department had been put on the case.
One witness said the truck driver appeared to accelerate toward his victims
The driver was killed by French police, authorities said.
French President Francois Hollande said the country’s state of emergency which was set to end on July 26th will be extended by three months after the attack in Nice.

A bill will be put forward in Parliament next week, Hollande said.
