80-year-old granny in court over brewing chang’aa

An 80-year-old grandmother has been released on a free bond after she was arraigned in a Meru court for brewing chang’aa.

Mwanaidi Ramadhan was arrested by police officers with 60 litres of chang’aa at Chaure Village in Imenti North Sub-County and arraigned before Meru Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochieng.

Ramadhan did not take plea after Senior Prosecution Counsel Moses Waliaula filed an application in the court refuting the allegations that an 80-year-old woman was an illicit distiller considering her advanced age.

Waliaula prayed with the magistrate to defer the plea and order Meru Police station OCS to conduct a thorough investigation to establish if the chang’aa that the police presented in court was from Ramadhan.

The magistrate accepted the counsel’s prayers and ordered Ramadhan’s granddaughter, who accompanied her in court, to sign court documents for her grandmother to be released on a free Bond.

The case will be mentioned on August 13, 2015.
