85,000 households facing hunger in Baringo, DG says

Baringo Deputy Governor Jacob Chepkwony has said 85,000 households in the county are facing a hunger crisis.

According to him, the most affected parts are Tiaty (26,000), Baringo North (18,000), Mogotio (12,000), Baringo South (11,000), Baringo Central (9,000) and Eldama Ravine (9,000).

“Those who are blessed in the community let’s assist those who are not able to provide for themselves. Churches should also contribute for those who are vulnerable,” he pleaded.

The deputy governor was speaking on Friday while distributing 30 bags of maize to residents of Bondeni in Kabarnet town.

He noted that those living in lowlands and slum areas are worst affected.

“Areas like Kamelilo, Shauri Moyo and Bondeni residents are also at risk of starvation. Other parts of Baringo Central like Emok and Bekibon are also faced with the same problem” he said.

Two weeks ago, the death toll in Baringo and Turkana counties rose to 21.

Local media reports revealed that residents were surviving on wild fruits that have to be boiled for up to 10-hours to remove the poison.
