87pc of Kenyans unhappy with economic direction: Twaweza poll

87percent of Kenyans are dissatisfied with the country’s direction on economic management, a study has revealed.

The report from Twaweza, a research and consulting firm, said the number of those polled who said they are disgruntled has been on the rise since 2016.

“9 out of 10 citizens (87percent) are dissatisfied with the country’s direction on economic management while 8 out of 10 (82percent) are dissatisfied with the country’s direction in job creation,” the report released on Monday reads.

Another 54percent of Kenyans who took part in the poll said they are dissatisfied with the war on corruption while 35percent responded in the affirmative.

In relation to that, 77percent said corruption is the biggest impediment to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big 4 Agenda, followed by politics and bureaucracy.

3 out of 4 citizens (77percent) cite corruption as a possible reason why the government may not deliver on its four priority areas – enhancing manufacturing, food security and nutrition, universal health coverage and affordable housing,” the Twaweza study adds.

On the housing agenda, 19percent said they are sceptical of the project as they believe it will only benefit those in power: the rich, politicians or top civil servants.

38percent of respondents said they think poor citizens in urban areas are most likely to benefit and 3 out of 10 (28percent) said ‘all poor Kenyans should benefit.’

In regards to food security, 40percent believe that to get food security in Kenya there needs to be a reduction in cost of farm inputs while another 40percent said the solution is to reduce cost of food.
