90% of Water Sources in Laikipia County Run Dry

Almost all boreholes and rivers in Laikipia County have run dry following the prolonged drought that is being experienced across the country.

According to Mustafa Parkoluor, Laikipia County officer in charge of disaster and drought, this has been caused by the lack of enough rainfall in the region for the last three years.

He said the condition has forced the residents to turn to boreholes as the sole source of water.

He further said the condition has been worsened by the farmers who block water along rivers to carry out their agribusinesses.

“Nanyuki River is being obstructed by many users like the horticultural farmers and the portable pump users’ and that is why the river is dry,” noted Mr Mustafa.

He said they are working with the government agencies to ensure that farmers who block water during this dry season have their licences withdrawn.
