A cop, Ksh.50K & a graduation: Tale of police officer gone rogue

A police constable and three civilians have been arrested after allegedly stealing Ksh.50,000 from a driver in Nairobi.

Constable Job Anyona (based at Railways Police Station) was arrested on Thursday with three civilians.

“The victim, a car-hire driver, was attending a relative’s graduation at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) when the gang of four, all purporting to be police officers hand-cuffed him, took his phone and car keys, before demanding for Ksh.30,000 for his release. The gang could not release him after giving the 20K,” DCI said.

It is further revealed that the suspects forced him to borrow the balance from friends through M-Pesa.

However, in a twist of events, the driver spotted a Police Chief Inspector and rushed to him for help, forcing the gang to flee.

“The gang started fleeing in separate ways but were cornered and arrested by members of the public,” DCI said.

The police boss is said to have asked for backup from Capital Hill Detectives.

When the suspects were arrested, the police did a search and recovered two mobile phones, Ksh. 50,140 in cash, a damaged police pocket phone and handcuffs.

“They are all placed in custody and will be charged accordingly. We congratulate the public for joining hands in fighting crime,” DCI said on Twitter.
