A Prado, 13 Ethiopians and bhang: Police chase ends up in Kirinyaga

13 Ethiopians were intercepted on Thursday evening onboard a Prado vehicle in Kirinyaga.

Reports indicate that Sagana traffic police officers noticed that the 7-seater car was overloaded and ordered the driver to stop but he declined.

A hot pursuit ensued as the officers chased the suspects on the busy Sagana-Karatina road.

The suspects were eventually cornered at Makutano area but the driver had fled the scene and abandoned his passengers and the vehicle.

‘The Ethiopians between 14 and 24 years old were being transported to Nairobi from Ethiopia and right now they are being held at Sagana Police Station and will charged for being in the county illegally,” Wenda said

Wenda said police are looking for the driver and the Prado car has been towed to Sagana Police Station.

He added that 20 kilogrammes of bhang was also discovered inside the car.

On Friday morning, the suspects were arraigned at the Baricho Law Court in Kirinyaga County and charged with being in the country illegally.

The 13 appeared before Baricho Senior Resident Monicah Kivuti but could not take plea as they could not communicate in English or Kiswahili.

The prosecution team led by Irene Magoro is seeking to have the suspects remanded at the Kerugoya GK Prison for four days until a translator is provided.
