Abolish KCPE, Says Masinde Muliro VC

A university vice chancellor has urged the Kenya National Examination Council to abolish the Kenya Certificate for Primary Education (KCPE) exams.

Speaking in Busia, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology Vice Chancellor Prof. Fredrick Otieno said poor performance in the national exams demoralises students causing them to drop out of school.

The VC said this while at an event to open new branch for the University.

Professor Otieno named countries like Tanzania and South Africa that abolished class eight national exams and called on the government to emulate their example.

DEVELOPMENT

“If the Ministry of education seriously takes this into account, the implementations will be  easier to help students continue with their education,’ he said.

Busia County Governor Sospeter Ojaamong backed the sentiments, saying that this will lead to development in the education sector if implemented.

In 2010, Jeremiah Kioni filed a motion in parliament to seek for the abolishment of KCPE.

The motion created controversy and was later rejected.
