Abortion cases drastically drop in Nyanza

Cases of abortion have drastically reduced in Nyanza region following the high uptake of long-term contraceptives by young women.

Caroline Nyandat, a Reproductive Officer at the Kisumu Medical and Education Trust (KMET), while speaking during a Reproductive Health Stakeholders’ Sensitization Forum in Siaya Town, said the number f young women seeking abortion services has greatly reduced.

Ms Nyandat said that after KMET began promoting the use of long acting reversible contraceptives, cases of post abortion care services have reduced especially in Migori, Kisumu and Siaya Counties.

Nyandat stated that KMET has been working with eight heath facilities in Siaya County, eight in Migori and six in Kisumu to promote family planning.

She said that Migori County is leading in terms of the contraceptives uptake due to the early sexual debut amongst the young people who want to prevent unintended pregnancies.
