Activist Boniface Mwangi injured during protest
A peaceful march set to protest against police brutality turned brutal after human rights activist Boniface Mwangi was hit with a tear gas canister on Thursday.
A police officer holding a loaded teargas rifle was caught on camera aiming disturbingly close at the former Starehe MP aspirant’s chest, before firing.
According to Mr. Mwangi, the police shot him because he was carrying a dummy bullet that was a prop for the protest meant to send a message on police fighting unarmed citizens.
“I was a carrying a giant, dummy bullet written #StopKillingUs. The police officer pushed me and then fired to my chest, point blank,” he tweeted.
In a letter dated October 18, addressed to Nairobi Commander, Japheth Koome, a human rights activist group called “Team Courage” notified office of the Inspector General, Joseph Boinnet and acting interior minister, Fred Matiangi of a peaceful march scheduled for Thursday running under the hashtag #StopKillingProtesters.
“I have been treated at Kenyatta Hospital. X-ray done, nothing broken. Just a hematoma (a solid swelling of clotted blood within the tissues),” he said.
The demonstration turned into running battles when the protesters led by Mwangi went to the IG’s office to deliver a petition.
