Activists warn police of human rights violations in operation to flush out killers of OCS, Chief in Chuka

Activists have urged police to ensure they uphold human rights as they carry out their operation in Kamahindi village, Tharaka Nithi County.

While citing incidents of serious human rights violations in similar operations in the past, activists led by Wawira Njue called on the authorities to avoid targeting locals with acts of intimidation.

Meanwhile, Kamahindi village remains deserted after residents begun fleeing their homes after officers were deployed in the area on Thursday following the lynching of an OCS and the area Chief.

Chief Japhet Majau Mukengu was beaten to death on Tuesday by residents who were allegedly angered after the chief’s brother detained some goats belonging to one of the locals.

On Wednesday, Chuka OCS Joseph Kinyua went to the area with another police officer in pursuit of a sixth suspect believed to be the ringleader of the group that killed the Chief.

He was hacked to death while the officer narrowly escaped the attack.

Five suspects were arrested on the same night over the chief’s murder.
