Aden Duale blames Judiciary for lagging in war against graft

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has accused the Judiciary of lagging in the fight against corruption in the country.

Duale says the Judiciary has not been vibrant in clipping the menace with most cases before court yet to be ruled on.

In an interview on Iftin FM on Wednesday, the Garissa Township MP noted that most corruption scandals are being unearthed in county governments, lauding President Uhuru Kenyatta for cracking down on corruption in the national government.

“The biggest corruption scandals are in county governments. President Kenyatta is fighting corruption and those implicated have been sacked,” said Duale.

He further called on opposition coalition CORD to respect the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) adding that there is a well spelt out process that should be followed in the disbandment of the commission.

Duale’s statement came just a day after CORD legislators led by Senator Johnson Muthama stated that they would storm IEBC offices to launch a new push for the Okoa Kenya referendum.

The drive hit a snag after IEBC stated that it did not garner the required one million signatures, a decision that has been widely condemned by CORD.

The opposition has claimed that the electoral commission is working with government to frustrate their referendum push and calls for electoral reforms.

Duale also weighed in on the raging debate on ICC saying the cases against President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto were politically motivated.

He called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to desist from targeting African countries for prosecution.

“Those who destroyed nations like Syria and Iraq should be tried at ICC too. ICC should not just target African Nations,” he said.

The debate on whether or not Kenya should withdraw from ICC has dominated headlines in the past days following President Kenyatta’s pronouncement last Saturday that Kenya was done with the international court.

Speaking during the Nakuru thanksgiving rally at Afraha Stadium, President Kenyatta stated that he will not allow another Kenyan to be tried at the ICC, putting in question the fate of three Kenyans who are wanted at the ICC over allegations of witness tampering.

“For those still looking for us, they should note that we have closed that chapter and we will not go back there again,” said President Kenyatta.

“We will not allow another Kenyan to undergo the pain we went through, having to face charges in a foreign court.”

The President’s remarks have elicited sharp criticism from CORD co-principal Moses Wetangula and a host of opposition legislators who have stated their intention to ensure the country remains at the ICC.
