Aden Duale vows to table two-thirds gender Bill, again

Majority Leader of the National Assembly Aden Duale has announced plans to re-introduce the elusive two-thirds gender Bill that flopped in February.

Speaking in Kisumu when he graced ‘Mothers For Peace’ event, Duale said he will not relent in his quest to bridge gender disparity in the House by pushing for the amendment in the Constitution to allow for extra nominations slots for women.

The Garissa Township Member of Parliament however cautioned that division between women leaders could still cause the Bill to face hurdles.

According to the vocal MP, the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga seems to have widened this rift in women leadership.

The legislator decried the presence of two distinct groups of women leaders in the country, one dubbed ‘Embrace’ that has been seen to be pushing for the handshake, the other ‘Inua Mama’ that leans towards Deputy President William Ruto’s corner.

“I will keep on trying to introduce the Bill. But, again, the women now are divided,” said Duale.

“Now there is a group calling themselves ‘Embrace’, they have their own uniform, I saw another group calling themselves ‘Inua Mama.’”

Duale further stated that the handshake should not be personalized for political gain but was meant to bring Kenyans together.

The ‘Mothers For Peace’ event, attended by among others Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o and Woman Representative Rosa Buyu, was organized by Kisumu-based ‘Sisters With a Mission Organization.’
