African Union calls for leaders to step up
The African Union(AU) has now called upon all stakeholders to exercise top leadership values during this electoral period terming it as a “crucial period of democracy” in Kenya.
In a letter referenced the situation in Kenya, AU chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat said that the Union has been closely following political developments in the country including the withdrawal of opposition leader, Raila Odinga from the repeat presidential poll.
“AU stands ready to take any initiate deemed appropriate to facilitate the peaceful conclusion of the electoral process,” read the letter in part.
In the letter dated October 11, the commission expressed its commitment towards overseeing a successful completion of the electoral process scheduled for October 26.
The commission further pledged to maintain its support in contributing to the consolidation of democracy in Kenya and preservation of peace and stability in the country, asserting that it has deployed its observers since September 2017.
