AG Githu Muigai mum on resignation as he meets envoy

Attorney General Dr. Githu Muigai made his first public appearance since his shock resignation on Tuesday, February 13 and did a fantastic job of evading the media.

Many believe that the AG, whose resignation was announced by President Kenyatta, did not resign but was pushed out over a fall out with State House. Judge Paul Kihara Kariuki is set to replace him.

Dr. Muigai held a press briefing on Thursday with Roberto Belzeretti the Director General from the government of Switzerland, to initial the FRACC agreement between the Swiss government and the Republic of Kenya.

On the business at hand, the AG said that the government will continue to provide the widest possible mutual assistance in criminal investigations, prosecutions and judicial proceedings in criminal matters.

He further added that Kenya is signing a legal mutual assistance framework with other countries and the response given was positive.

“We are signing with other countries a mutual legal assistance framework like the one we have executed with you and we have received a very enthusiastic response from several other countries as you are aware that the document we shall initialise today is a three way agreement between the Republic of Kenya, you and the United Kingdom,” he said.

He said the agreement was the first of its kind in the world and is proud that Kenya is the first state in Africa to be part of it.

“Very important milestone in our cooperation that demonstrates our shared belief by our governments and those of the United Kingdom and Jersey that a frame work for return of assets from corruption cab be effective, “said the AG.

After the press conference, Dr. Muigai quickly left the room refusing to address the issue.
