AG: Governors’ Wives Should Not Be Called First Ladies

The AG has also stated that the governor’s wives should neither be allocated county offices nor given monetary provisions.

According to Githu, the County Government Act does not provide the Governor with the same privileges and powers as the President.

He added that the governors’ wives should utilize private and civic resources to undertake informal functions.

This is contrary to their on- going public engagements.

The AG says the proposed office of the County First Lady would not fit in the definition of an office in the County Public Service.

He stated that according to Section 60(1) (C) of the constitution, upon establishment of the office of he County Public Service, the office shall be vacant.

The office shall be vacant to be filled competitively and transparently in accordance with the prescribed appointment o promotion procedures.

In a letter addressed to the governors and copied to the AG, Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru, Chief of Staff of the President and Head of Public Service at State House Joseph Kinyua , Clerks Jeremiah Nyengenye and Justin Bundi, the transitional authority has directed counties to comply.
