Aga Khan Hospital says woman removed after family abandoned her

A woman who was allegedly dumped outside her home in Kileleshwa had been discharged six years ago but remained in the ward accruing over Ksh.49million in expenses, the Aga Khan Hospital has said.

In a statement issued to newsrooms on Friday, the hospital’s legal office said the mother declined to pick up her daughter Kibibi Abdulla despite numerous calls to do so.

“In addition to the potential exposure should Ms. Kibibi suffer any personal injury at the hospital, the hospital is also faced with a bill of Ksh.49,038,789.36 which has been accrued over the six years  that Ms. Kibibi has continued to stay at the hospital premises without consent,” the statement said.

Earlier on Friday, the mother, Dr. Christine Wendo Obaga, told journalists that the hospital “dumped” her daughter outside their home in Kileleshwa.

She lamented saying they left her at the doorstep still in a Aga Khan Hospital branded gown.

The hospital however maintains that because of the case that is before a court of law, they cannot comment further on the issue.

According to the statement, Ms. Kibibi was admitted in 2012 with a condition that needed surgery but a complication and the mother filed a complaint at the medical board.

A year later, it was found that neither the Aga Khan Hospital nor the doctor attending to the case was negligent.

Dissatisfied with the ruling of the Board, Dr. Obago sought the intervention of the Milimani Law Courts but the case was dismissed in 2016.

“Due to patient confidentiality, the hospital shall not reveal more information on the case as it also seeks to respect the rights of Ms. Kibibi,” the statement adds.
