Al Shabaab killed 180 KDF soldiers- Somalia President

At least 180 Kenyan troops were killed when Al Shabaab attacked their camp at El Adde, Somalia in mid January, this is according to Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohammud.

President Mohammud gave the death toll of 180 during an interview with a Somali cable television station, while defending his attendance at a memorial for the fallen Kenyan soldiers.

According to BBC news, some Somalis accused President Mohammud on social media of showing greater concern for the killing of Kenyans than his own nationals.

Kenya’s army said the number was untrue, but failed to give an exact account of the soldiers killed in the deadly January 15th attack.

Earlier reports had said that the Kenya Defence Forces camp had a company of not more than 120 soldiers.

Al Shabaab had said that it had captured some KDF soldiers during the attack.

Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Samson Mwathethe said KDF embarked on a search, rescue and recovery operation immediately after the attack but noted that it was a delicate operation.

The Islamist militant group said it had killed about 100 Kenyan troops.
